The academic system at NIT, Jalandhar is framed on a credit based semester examin ation system. The credit system envisages a continuous evaluation of stu dent's performance, and provides flexibility for academic progress at an optimum pace based on individual ability and convenience, subject to the constraint of the minimum requirements for continuation in the aca demic programme. The student is awarded a letter grade from the prescribed grading system in each co urse registered by him. For each pass grade, the students accumulates the course credits as earned credits. The academic performance of the student is indicated in terms of the number of credits that he/she earns and the weighted grade point average. A specified minimum number of credits sh ould be acquired on semester or session basis in order to qualify for co ntinuation in the academic programme and the award of degree. 1.1 Credits Each lectur e/tutorial hour per week per semester is assigned one credit. Each la boratory hour per week per semester is assigned half credit. Howeve r, some courses are preparatory in nature and have half the credit weightag e of a normal course. The courses without credit are termed as noncredit ( NC) courses. 1.2 Grades In grading system, the evaluation in terms of marks is replaced by the award of letter grades. The structure and guidelines for award of grades is given.
* subject to confirmation based on standar d deviation, if the sample size is greater than 20, and is flexible to the recommendation of the individual course coordinators with proper justific ation. The grades will be awarded to a student in each registered course including a labor atory course, based on his/her performance evaluated through a prescrib ed scheme of evaluation. In theory courses the evaluation is weighted on cl ass tests, tutorial work, home assignment and semester examinations in a prescribed proportions. The recommended weightage for class tests is 30%-40%, assignments/tutorial work is 10%-20% and End Semester Exam is 50%. In the laboratory and practical classes, it would be weighted equally on the basis of regular practical work and an examination conduc ted for the purpose. The credits for the courses in which a student has obtained " E " (minimum passing grade fo r a course) or a higher grade will be considered as credits earned by him/h er. In addition, courses up to a maximum of 8 credits in case of B Tech s tudents in which a student has got "NP "grade will also count towards his/h er earned credits. Any course in which a student has obtained "W " or "NF "grade will not be counted towards his/her earned credits. For the oth er (elective) courses in which "U" "W" grade have been obtained, t he student may take the same course or any other course from the same category when it is offered next. Further, "U " grades secured in any course stay p ermanently on the grade card. The weightage of these grades is not counted in the calculation of the SGPA and CGPA. An "I" grade denotes incomplete performance in any course due to absence at the end of semester. Upon completion of all course requirements, the "I" grade is co nverted to a regular grade. These grade s (NP and NF) are awarded in a course that the student opts to audit. A udit applications are allowed during the first four weeks of a semeste r. The audit pass (NP) grade is awarded if a minimum "E" grade is obtain ed in the course and attendance is above 75% in the classes. If either of t hese requirements is not fulfilled, the audit fail (NF) grade is awarded. In courses, where NP grade is obtained, the corresponding cou rse credits are counted towards earned credits. The grades obtained in a n audit course are not considered in the calculation of SGPA or CGPA. A "W"   ;grade is awarded in a course where the student has opted to withdraw from the c ourse. Withdrawal from a course is permitted until one week after the class test-I. 1.3 Grade Point Averages The perform ance of a student will be evaluated in terms of two indices, viz. the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA)which is the Grade Point Average f or a semester and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which is the Grade Point Average for all the completed semesters at any point of time . The SGPA is calculated on the basis of grades obtained in all courses, except audit courses, registered for in the semester. (Course credits x Grade point) except audit courses
The CGPA is calculated on the basis of all pass grades, except audit courses obtained in all completed semesters. (Course credits x Grade point)for courses with pass grade except audit Sem courses 1.4 Degree Requirements: For obtaining a degree in a 4 - year B Tech
