Brief Research Profile: | : |
In recent decade, there has been a remarkable growth in wireless communication. Communication paradigm has shifted from wired communication to different and dynamic environment of wireless communication. Technology advancement not only improves the life of a living human being, but it gives the new research dimensions to the researchers. For example, the Internet. Internet and its applications such as WWW (World Wide Web), email, Voice over IP (VoIP), and Voice over LTE (VoLTE)completely changes the way of creating and accessing the information. With the emergence of these applications, there is the tremendous growth in development as well as the use of smartphones, tablets and other mobile communication devices. With the passage of time, these devices significantly improve their storage, computing and communication capacities. Communication capacities spread over Bluetooth to Wi-Fi and 2G-3G to 4G & 5G. Depending upon the application, communication among these devices may be direct communication or multi-hop (e.g., Mobile Ad hoc Networks). Direct communication takes place when devices (nodes) come in communication range of each other. Such type of mobile networks in which communication takes place “opportunistically” called Opportunistic Networks (OppNets). The mobility in this kind of network is crucial, since it helps to spread data more efficiently. OppNets are a new peer-to-peer networking paradigm. In OppNets devices communication opportunities by forwarding data whenever they come close i.e., within mutual wireless transmission range of each other. OppNets is a subclass of Ubiquitous Computing i.e., OppNets supports the concepts of “anywhere anytime computing”. OppNets are the specific class of peer-to-peer networks where user’s personal devices are the part of network. These devices communicated when they found any communication opportunity. By the tremendous evolution and growth in mobile communication, mobile phones become extremely popular and an integral part of our day-to-day life. Today’s mobile phone are smartphones, which are equipped with powerful processors, rich communication capabilities that includes cellular telephony, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Beside from basic functioning (phone calls and SMS services), today we depend on them for information acquisition, social networking, entertainment and much more. The capability and extensive use of smartphones make it feasible to disseminate the information in opportunistic network environment. Motivation for OppNets is highly influenced from the emerging trends towards ubiquitous computing. As a user wants the communication facilities at all the time and at all the places. So OppNets is the platform, where various networking devices with very diverse features of computing and communication, uses the environment to give the services to the user according their capabilities, as OppNets is formed by several nodes over a specific area. These nodes are the handheld devices carried by people and equipped with large memory, sensing capability, and high computational power with short-range radio transmission functionality and wirelessly connected to each other. |
