Investigations on “Hydrodynamics of Trickle Bed Reactors” • Studies on the hydrodynamic behavior of a trickle-bed-reactor at atmospheric pressure were conducted. • A data bank for pressure drop, dynamic liquid saturation and flow-regime-transition for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids was generated. • Evaluated the performance of trickle bed reactors for non-Newtonian rheologically complex (viscoinelastic and viscoelastic) fluids. • Conducted a parametric study and investigated the effect of various process parameters like flow rate of the fluid-phases, bed geometry (e.g. porosity and particle sphericity), surface tension, viscosity, flow consistency index K, flow behavior index n and viscoelasticity of liquid-phase on flow-regime-transition, two-phase pressure drop and dynamic liquid saturation. • Proposed suitable regime transition map to predict transition from low to high-interaction regime for Newtonian non-foaming systems and extended it to the non-Newtonian rheologically complex fluids. • Based on the observed phenomena and the data generated, developed suitable correlations that predicted the hydrodynamic performance of trickle bed reactor in terms of two-phase pressure drop and dynamic liquid saturation. • For the better understanding of the complex trickle-bed-behavior an analytical model has been developed for rheologically simple air-water like fluids. |
